On June 20, 2014, U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander received the endorsement of the National Federation of Independent Business at a press conference held at Stowers Machinery’s East Knoxville store.
In his prepared remarks, Senator Alexander expressed his support for the independent businesses like Stowers Machinery in Tennessee and across the nation that support the nation’s economy and raise the standard of living for the families they employ (watch video). He also expressed his concern about the number of federal regulations that make it difficult for independent businesses to be successful in today’s economic environment.
When members of the media asked a question about the increase in the gas tax recently proposed by Tennessee’s other U.S. Senator (Bob Corker), Wes Stowers responded by describing the need for state and federal governments to act responsibly to maintain the nation’s highway system and the challenge that the nation’s citizens face in trying to fund highway maintenance with user fees that have not increased in decades. Senator Alexander described his support for an organized, effective road program that is supported financially by those who use the roads, either through gas taxes or other user fees (watch video).
After the press conference, Senator Alexander took some time to meet the Stowers folks who attended the press conference before leaving for his next appointment.
